Charlemont requires the use of town stickers for disposal at the town Transfer Station to offset the cost of this service.
Stickers cost $1.00 each and are available from the attendant. Stickers may also be available at retail locations in Charlemont.
The number of stickers required per bag size:
Kitchen size bag (up to 16 Gallons) = 1 sticker
Regular size trash bags ( up to 35 Gallons) = 2 stickers
Contractor Bags = 3 stickers
We are now participating in a compost program ! Compost pails are available at the transfer station and in the document section on this page is a list of the items you can compost. For more information talk to the transfer station attendants.
For those residents who want to compost at home:
Charlemont residents can purchase an Earth Machine backyard compost bin at a subsidized price of $25. The subsidized compost bin can be purchased at the Franklin County Solid Waste District. Visit https://franklincountywastedistrict.org/Composting for information on backyard composting and the District’s office location. The town encourages all residents to remove organic material from the trash and use a backyard compost bin. Approximately 25% of household trash is organic material that can be diverted to a compost bin.
- Tin, steel, and aluminum
Computers monitors and small televisions are taken for a fee, monitors tend to cost $10 and televisions tend to cost $10-$40 based on size. Contact the attendant for availability.

Clean Sweep Bulky Waste Information:
In the spring and fall on specific days at specific sites, residents from any District town may bring bulky items such as tires, appliances, scrap metal, furniture, carpeting, construction debris, computers, televisions, propane gas tanks, and other large items. Materials will be recycled whenever possible. Information is in the link below.
Bulky Items - Companies Offering Pickup & Disposal
If you have bulky items (mattresses, upholstered furniture, wood furniture, toilets, sinks, and carpet) that you are unable to transport to the Greenfield Transfer Station, or to the Franklin County Solid Waste Management District's May and October "Clean Sweep" events, there are local companies that you can hire to pick up and properly dispose of the items.
You will be contracting directly with the private hauler and will be responsible for paying any pickup and disposal fees that are charged. This is NOT a service provided by the Town of Charlemont. You are making a private arrangement with a private company to perform a service, and the Town does not control the fees that are charged.
This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all companies that may provide this service, and does not constitute any endorsement or recommendation by the Town of Charlemont. Companies are listed alphabetically.
